Beekeeping in Minnesota

Our Youngest helping with a hive inspection!

In addition to Siena Soap Company, our family began an additional venture this past year. As many of you know we have become Minnesota Beekeepers. We began the adventure this Spring with hiving 2 packages of Minnesota Hygienic Honey bees.

The arrival of 2 - 3 lb. packages of Minnesota Hygenic Honey bees the end of April was exciting and shocking at the same time. There were so many bees! Not knowing what to expect, we nervously hived them the day before Easter. We suffered a cold, wet spring not helping our early endeavors much. As the hot humid days of summer rolled in we began to have many interesting experiences as 1st year novices. One of our hives went queenless the first part of July. The other hive exploded with bees and decided to swarm the end of July. Luckily, we recaptured the swarm cell, and the other hive did requeen themselves. Our bees are doing great in spite of our first year jitters, inexperience, and clumsy beekeeping.

As we build our hives we expect to use all the products of of our hives including the honey, beeswax, and propolis in our Siena Soap Company's all natural skin care products. Next summer we will also be able to offer raw, fresh wildflower honey, possibly beeswax candles, and propolis products.

We will keep you updated on our progress in this new and mesmerizing world of honey bees. Join us in our journey!

We started out creating the bar with coconut milk instead of the usual water. Coconut milk adds creaminess and pure luxury to the soap bar. Along with coconut oil, palm oil (sustainable palm), and olive oil, we added cocoa butter and avocado oil to further soothe and baby your skin. The Safe Cosmetic Act - Is it Okay to Oppose It?

HR 5786 – The Safe Cosmetic Act – Is it Okay to Oppose It?

On July 20, 2010, HR 5786 was introduced to Congress, “To amend title VI of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to ensure the safe use of cosmetics, and for other purposes.

I would be the first in line to support well written legislation that would guarantee safety in skin care products. In fact, the chief motivating factor for me to began handcrafting personal care products for my own family was really the issue of the “junk” contained in so many of the commercially produced products. My kid’s skin did not always react so favorably to big name products. That began my quest for healthier and safer alternatives. Siena Soap Company was born seeking this one honorable quest… pure, natural, healthy skin care.

Of course it is a continuing travesty that known toxins and carcinogens are allowed in everyday products used by babies, children, and even adults. I have been on my soapbox for some time telling of the drying, harsh effects of the commercially manufactured detergents with known toxins marketed as everyday soap, and of the unsafe chemicals in common skin care products. Something has to be done. The authors of this bill see the problem. I appreciate the intent of this bill. Undoubtedly, reforming our current cosmetic industry is a necessary and noble endeavor. This bill – HR 5786, though, is not the answer. Here’s why!

1)   HR 5786 is being categorized as a “pink slip” for the hundreds of thousands of home-based or small independent soap making and cosmetic companies in our country. Unfortunately, if passed, this bill will make no distinction between the small all natural skin care businesses that are already manufacturing safe, natural product and the large synthetic beauty manufacturers. The bill will require extreme documentation of sales, vendor purchases, changes in product formulation, and company activities. The freedom to better a recipe, experiment with new products, change up a product line or suppliers will result in a paper chase of getting Big Brother’s okay. How will these home based businesses handle the additional time spent laboring over all this documentation? How will the government police all these new requirements? Obviously, it will create more red tape, more bureaucracy, and more taxpayer money spent for additional cosmetic “police.” Lumping all natural small businesses with large corporate manufacturers in cosmetic policing makes no sense. Small businesses are suffering enough in this failing economy. This will be the final assault for many.
2)   It is important to remember that most of these small all-natural soap making and cosmetic companies are woman owned. Many of these small businesses are able to provide jobs for a modest amount of workers. We are the backbone of the American economy and the American entrepreneurial spirit of this great country. We are not asking for bailouts. We just want to continue to provide for the needs of our customers with products that are safe, inexpensive, and useful.
3)   Ingredient lists will be mandated where each company will be required to disclose each and every detectable trace chemical in each product marketed. Foods in this country do not require knowing which molecule exist in the parts per million range!
4)   This ingredients listing requirement will require expensive testing of each product marketed to secure every detectable molecule in it. Small business cannot afford this. And who will pay for this? The consumer, of course!
5)   HR 5786 also includes a Savings Clause that will allow states or cities to enact legislation that is more specific or severe that this proposed federal law. I am presently able to do business in any of the 50 states. If new and different laws are enacted in states and municipalities it will make it a nightmare to do business outside my own state for fear of violating another state’s cosmetic laws.
6)   “The Story of Cosmetics” a cartoon video released on YouTube and sponsored by The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, says it represents the cosmetic industry. I started to follow the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics several months ago and the work of their sister, EWG (Environmental Working Group). Their idea of a safe US cosmetic industry caught my eye. I really believed that they would represent our best interests. Now I believe they do not understand the small all natural business industry at all nor do they represent our wishes or us. Their video using skulls and bones and various scare tactics scare the consumer into thinking even our natural products may not be safe. Also their studies do not tell the whole truth as outlined by R. Tisserand in Tunnel Vision.

I know it is hard to oppose a bill called The Safe Cosmetic Act – it just sounds bad. But research the facts. Educate yourself. Then contact your congressmen.

I know that I have been long winded. Thank you for wading through all of this. I believe it really is okay to oppose the Safe Cosmetics Act. It surely doesn’t mean we are against safe cosmetics. What we are opposing is a poorly written desperately overreaching piece of legislation.   If passed, HR5786 will surely kill entrepreneurial small cottage industry in this country while continuing to make government bigger and more powerful.

Skin Care Ingredient to Avoid

It seems incredible, but many skin care products are loaded with ingredients that can actually harm your skin and your overall health over time.

Remember that your skin is the largest organ of he body. Anything you put on it can be easily absorbed through the pores.

Here are a highlight of some of the top skin care ingredient offenders!!!!!

1. Mineral Oil

This oil also may be listed as liquid paraffin, paraffin wax, and petrolatum. This oil is used pervasively throughout the skin care industry. The one reason is because it is cheap! Mineral oil prevents the skin from beathing, clogs pores, and stops the natural ability of the skin to eliminate toxins. It actually fuels acne. It also leads to premature aging of the skin because if used for any extended period of time, the skin can become dependent on it, causing chapping and dryness.

2. Dioxane

This ingredient is a synthetic derivative of coconut and contains high concentrations of 1,4-dioxane, a chemical known to cause cancer. This substance is readily absorbed by the skin.

3. Synthetic Fragrance

It is ok to smell nice. Generally we only use a little perfume, cologne, or bodyspray. For the most part, your skin care products should not contain synthetic fragrances. Many synthetic fragrances are produced from ingredients that are known to be toxic or carcinogenic.

Why is it fine to use perfume or cologne as a fragrance, but not skin care products?

We recommend this because when you use skin care products, they are usually applied all over your face, neck, and body. This covers a lot more body surface area, and therefore, a great deal more of chemical absorption occurs.

At Siena Soap Company we use essential oils to scent our products instead of synthetic fragrances. Why would we go to the trouble of carefully selecting soothing all natural vegetable oils and butters in our products, and then go ahead and add synthetic fragrance? Essential oils are all natural plant derived oils that not only contain wonderful aromatherapy, in many cases they also provide a therapeutic component.

4. Parabens

Often labeled as methyl, propbl, butyl, or ethyl paraben. Many skin care products including moisturizers will use parabens as a preservative providing their products with a longer shelf life. Studies show, however, that parabens may cause cancer. They also interfere with the bodies endrocrine system, and often cause allergic reactions and skin rashes.

5. Alcohols

Often called by the following names: Ethanol, ethyl alcohol, methanol, benzyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, and SD alcohol. When found in skin care products alcohol is very drying and irritating for the skin. Alcohols strip away the skin's natural acid mantle that acts as a protective barrier. This makes you more vulnerable to bacteria, molds, and viruses.

Five Tips for Healthy Skin

Many of you know that our skin is our body's largest organ and does absorb near 70% of what we put on it topically. Our skin is also our body's largest organ of elimination. To look and feel our best we all should make the little extra effort it takes to nourish and take care of our skin!

Here are five simple tips for healthier skin.

1.) Water keeps our body hydrated and our cells nourished and able to effectively eliminate waste. For most adults 8 - 8 ounce glasses of water every day is what our bodies require to work efficiently.

2.) Fiber keeps our digestive systems working well. Many health care specialists believe that an unhealthy digestive system will adversely effect the healthiness of our skin. So increase your intake of whole grains, cauliflower, ground flaxseed, and don't forget your apple every day!

3.) Improve your sluggish circulation by moving more! Get off your chair and try to walk 100 minutes each week, or fifteen minutes per day for starters. Your skin's health will improve with the new increased circulation!

4.) Avoid excessive sugar intake! Sugar prematurely ages our entire body. Start of slow and choose to slowly cut back in this area.

5.) Increase your intake of good fats such as flaxseed or walnut oils, or fish oil often found in cold water fish like salmon. Good fats are great for healthy skin.

What is a Shampoo Bar.....soap for your hair?

Most people are not sure about the idea of a shampoo bar. When explained, however, the "light bulb" goes on and many of these customers have become faithful shampoo bar converts.

First off, our shampoo bars are made with the finest all natural vegetable oils and butters. Unlike commercial liquid shampoo, our shampoo bars are free of synthetic colorants, preservatives, and petroleum by products. Our shampoo bars are also scented with the pure aromatherapy of natural plant derived essential oils - no synthetic fragrances are used here. They are 100% all natural hair care for beautiful hair.

Keep in mind that our shampoo bars are suitable for vegans (free of animal by-products). It is also good to know that all of our products are only tested on our enthusiastic family and friends. Our shampoo bars are also great for the environment... there are no bottles to recycle or throw away.

We have an exciting new soap that needs a name!!!!

Can you help us name our newest creation? We have developed a wonderful new soap that looks and smells divine. The added charcoal powder is a great detoxifier while the aroma is complex and balanced. We can hardly wait to use this aromatic bar. It is currently on the curing rack and will be ready to use July 10th.

Soap's Ingredients: Saponified oils of Olive, Coconut, Palm, Cocoa Butter, Palm Christi, Jojoba, Medicinal Activated Charcoal, Essential Oil Blend including Key Lime, Sweet Orange, Cedarwood, and Patchouli.

Olive Oil in Soap

When I choose our soap's ingredients I not only look at the actual physical properties they lend to the soap, but I also want each single ingredient to function as an outstanding and contributing skin care product.

That is why the majority of our soap recipes include a large proportion of Olive Oil. In fact, most of our aromatherapy soap is at made with at least 40% Olive Oil.

Why use Olive Oil in Soap?

Olive Oil is a wonderful moisturizer because is attracts moisture and holds it close to the skin forming a breathable film to prevent loss of internal moisture. While preforming this function Olive Oil never blocks the natural jobs of the skin such as sweating, releasing sebum, or shedding dead skin cells.

Olive Oil is also high in oleic acid. When Olive Oil is used as a main ingredient in a soap recipe, the soap will becomes an excellent cell regenerator because of this high content of oleic acid.

Soap made with a high percentage of Olive Oil is usually safe and gentle enough for the most sensitive of skin and even for the skin of babies.

Our Innocence soap bar is made with 90% Olive Oil. Goat milk and honey are added to this bar for their skin loving properties. This is a scent free bar and is wonderful for those who have extremely sensitive skin or for babies. I use this bar as my facial bar, and love its moisturizing properties.

When I have our Lotion Bars out at shows I often get people looking at them with a puzzled and inquisitive look on their face. It doesn't surprise me, because I realize that the majority of the population has never heard of a Lotion Bar.

Lotion Bars are lotion in a solid form minus the water. You use the bar anywhere you would use a lotion. They have a different feel than lotion, and melt on contact with your warm skin when rubbed. They are fantastic for:

Fast relief for dry and itchy skin
Calming symptoms of eczema and psoriasis
Helping with rashes, even diaper rash
Use after shaving as a moisturizer
Cuticle conditioning
Paper cuts

I just took one of our new creations out of the mold this week that I am really excited to share with all of you. The essential oils I used were a blend of sweet orange and patchouli.
